Gough Square Chambers has been ranked as the sole Band 1 set for Consumer Law by Chambers & Partners for over 30 years. Over that time, Members of Chambers have represented clients in some of the most significant and high-profile consumer cases involving the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) and the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA).
Members have acted for businesses in almost all of the CMA’s major sectoral investigations into alleged consumer law infringements. These include investigations concerning supermarket pricing practices, online retail markets, package holidays, furniture and carpet pricing, airline refund policies, residential ground rents, anti-virus software subscriptions, ticket resale platforms, online dating services, and COVID-19 cancellation and refund practices.
Members assist clients in responding to CMA information notices and investigative requests, making representations during the decision-making process (including engagement with the CMA’s Final Decision Group), and pursuing procedural challenges, including complaints to the Procedural Complaints Adjudicator. Members also have significant experience of appeals and High Court proceedings arising from CMA intervention.
