Jonathan Goulding has successfully defended Caffe Nero in a food safety prosecution. Following a three day trial, on 24th March 2016, Caffe Nero was acquitted of four food safety offences by a District Judge at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court. The case was brought by the London Borough of Wandsworth and concerned the ingestion by a consumer of a piece of wire contained in a panini that she had purchased in the Caffe Nero Putney store. The wire had come from the unauthorised use of a wire brush by a member of staff in breach of clear training and instruction concerning the cleaning of the panini grill. A successful ‘statutory ‘due diligence’ defence was made out by Caffe Nero and its food safety and hygiene systems were vindicated.
